Metal on El Capitan GM Candidate

As usual I test Metal on my NVS295, Xeon machine.

No metal-love with Apples stock drivers…

OS X El Capitan 10.11 Dev Beta 4 Released

Apple has released beta 4 of the Developer Preview version of OS X 10.11 El Capitan with build 15A226f.

Meanwhile also good news for nVidia GPU users as there are webdrivers available which work with El Capitan,11137.msg31303.html#msg31303

Low power, low profile

The new Quadro K1200 is designed to fit into a compact workstation. The Quadro K1200 is a half-height professional graphics card with 512 CUDA cores in its GM107 GPU – this is also based off the Maxwell processor architecture (more specifically, the first generation Maxwell variant featured on the GM107) – 4GB graphics memory and has a 45W thermal design profile.



The NVS 510 has 35W TDP, 2GB memory, 192 CUDA cores and a GK107 Kepler GPU.


Metal on OS X 10.11

El Cap looks pretty interesting and the introduction of Metal could mean also quite a boost for desktop applications. So what GPU you will need ? According to the Apple devs (page 84)


All Macs since 2012

will be blessed with Metal-support. That would be earliest according to the list of GPUs from Apple:

  • Intel HD 4000 from Mac mini (Mid 2012) or MacBook Air (Mid 2012)
  • ATI Radeon HD 5770 from Mac Pro (Mid 2012)
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M (aka: GK107 N13P-LP) from iMac (21-inch, Late 2012) also has a list of supported GPUs according to the current drivers of DP1.
